Autum Queen

I worked on Her Majesty for a little while this past week. The photo was taken yesterday, with a total of 105 hours worth of work.
This session I concentrated on the area at the lower right - the cape and brocade brown/olive/bronze area.

Some people on the Mirabilia BB have noticed that their Wisper thread is yellowing a bit. I had a good look at her in the sun yesterday and I don't think mine is. It still looks white to me. But I am stitching it next to pale creams and pale yellows so it could be picking up colour from that. I am stitching the Wisper on Winter from the same skein and it's definitely not yellow. I've also noticed that I need to reinforce a few beads when I do some more. The colour of the fabric is washed out a bit, but it's actually a pale greenish-grey called Waterlily.

My Wiki weakening

I've seent this several blogs lately but now that Clioratha and Whiz have done, I guess I should cave. Nothing like not having my own imagination or anything...

Go to Wikipedia and do a search for your birthday. It does not have to include the year. List 3 interesting facts, 2 births and 1 death.

Here are my results:
1915- Pluto was first photographed but wasn't recognized as a planet.
1953- Academy Awards are first televised.
1982 - Argentine troops land on South Georgia Island, precipitating the Falklands War.

Births
1950 - Ursula Andress. Swiss actress, famous for being a Bond girl in "Dr. No."
1969 - Connor Trinneer. Actor who played Trip on "Enterprise". I always thought he was kind of cute but I didn't know that he is exactly the same age as I am.

Death
1950 - Edgar Rice Burroughs. Author who wrote the Tarzan stories.

Angel Quilts

I wanted to show off some of the recent finished quilts that AQP Canada has done. These 3 quilts have not yet been sent to a hospital. Royal Columbian is next on our donor list so they likely will go there. The stitchers for these quilts are Sharon ( tigger and pony ) and Valerie ( angel ). Christina made the pony quilt, Dodie made the angel, and Brenda made Tigger.

100 years ago today..

.. at shortly after 5 am, a huge earthquake struck San Fransico. The thriving city was nearly wiped off the map, but the citizens were made of sterner stuff and they carried on magnificently.

Ya gotta love the San Andreas Fault...( and umpteen other ones in the vacinity )

Sunflower bread cloth

I am making this for my aunt and uncle in Calgary. It is their 20th anniversary in August and we hope to see them when we take the kids to Drumheller. The stitching is pretty basic, but working in the corner is kind of a pain. I don't really like stitching in hand very much. It will be nice and bright and cheerful when it's finished I think.

11 years ago today...

... was our rehearsal dinner at my in-laws place. Just like in 1995 our wedding was also on Easter weekend. On Good Friday the 14th we had a barbeque at family friends' place. April 15th was a fairly warm, sunny day but the wind was brisk at times. We got great photos though.
On the 16th we did the gift opening at my parent's place. So Easter dinner was not turkey, but platters of meat, cheese, fruit, etc.

This year we are supposed to go to my folk's trailer, but Sunday's weather looks to be extremely damp so Mom and Dad will likely be coming here. I have to call Dad in a bit and firm up the plan.

Birthdays,etc.

My BIL had his birthday on Friday and yesterday was the birthday of Bav's little girl. So this past weekend we were at 2 birthday parties. Weezie also was her school friend's party yesterday afternoon. Never a dull moment!

This coming Sat. is our anniversary. And just like 11 years ago, April 15th is the Sat. before Easter. I will try my usual baby-sitter so we can go out for dinner. I hope she's not going away or anything. I am glad that the 15th isn't Easter weekend every year!

Fire engines last night

The empty lot down the street is being cleared right now. Maybe someone will build a house finally. There was a back hoe working all day yesterday. Around 5 pm we heard sirens and then a fire engine stopped right in front of our house. ( the picture below ). The back hoe had hit the natural gas line. Fortunately the leak was small and easily fixable, but the street was blocked off for an hour at each bend. Toni said that it was blocked at Keith Wilson too. He came home the other way and parked around the corner. There was another fire engine down closer to the empty lot, and there was a police cruiser there too. Up at our end we had Constable Bowden ( the bottom photo ) blocking off the bend in the road with his ghost car. My neighbour is a paramedic and he knew most of the cops and firemen. The RCMP has hockey cards of themselves now. The kids got one each from Const. Bowden. The 2 pictures at the top are of Kyle, who was allowed to sit in the fire truck. It was turned off and he had strict instructions not to touch anything!

Horatio Nelson - Buccaneer?

This happened the other day but I forgot to blog about it. On Wed. night we went out for fish and chips. There is a local restaurant run by ex-patriot Brits. The restaurant is called "Victory" after Admiral Nelson's famous ship. The decor is Union Jacks, Englis Premiere League soccer jersey's ( Portsmouth in particular ), ship models, etc. There is a model of H.M.S. Victory over the fireplace upstairs. Plastic place mats feature black and white drawings of the ship docked in Portsmouth harbour. It's now a museum and my folks toured the ship when they were in England in Sept. On the front of the menu is a photo of the Admiral's wax likeness, presumably from Madame Toussaud's.

So Kyle is like usual with the questions - "What's that boat Daddy?", Where is that?" ( place mat photo ), "Is that the same boat Mommy?", "Who is that guy"? ( the admiral on the menu ), and the most important question of all "WAS HE A PIRATE DADDY?". T and I laughed hysterically!

Poor Admiral Nelson, hero of the great Battle of Trafalgar, his statue grave and serious on top of Nelson's column in Trafalgar Square in London, reduced to a common pirate by my son. Somehow I doubt the Victory ever flew the Jolly Roger.
